Prime Minister's directive to transfer government buildings to solar energy before summer


ISLAMABAD: The Prime Minister has directed to switch government buildings to solar energy before the arrival of summer and has said that switching to solar energy will significantly reduce the electricity bills of government institutions.


An important meeting regarding the promotion of solar energy in the country was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Commerce Minister Naveed Qamar, Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir, Advisor to Prime Minister Ahad Cheema, Special Assistants Jahanzeb Khan, Tariq Bajwa, and senior government officials attended the meeting.


The prime minister said that solar energy is the best source of clean and cheap electricity and it is the need of the hour, the promotion of solar energy is inevitable for the improvement of the economy and reduction of the import bill to help fuel. Necessary measures should be taken to promote the use of energy.

In the briefing given to the meeting, it was said that the Federal Cabinet has approved the framework for generating electricity from solar energy instead of expensive fuel across the country. will determine the tariff after which bids will be invited from investors on behalf of the Alternative Energy Development Board.


It was further informed in the briefing that three projects are under consideration for generating electricity from solar energy, including a 1200 MW project in Leh while 600 MW projects will be set up in Muzaffargarh and Trimum.


The Prime Minister directed that all relevant departments should take necessary steps to make RFP (Request for Proposals) and bidding work faster and more transparent.


The meeting was also briefed on the Prime Minister's vision of the federal government's transition of buildings across the country to solar energy. The meeting was told that the services of an expert consultant have been obtained regarding the solarization of federal government buildings.


The Prime Minister directed that in this regard centralized procurement should be adopted for all federal institutions which are effective and transparent.


The Prime Minister further directed that in this regard, the federal government buildings within the limits of Islamabad should be started, and later the government buildings in the entire country should be solarized.


The Prime Minister emphasized that before the start of the summer season, the solar energy of the government buildings should be ensured. The Prime Minister said that the transition to solar energy will significantly reduce the electricity bills of government institutions.
